Well I think I can safely say, I'm an old vet... age-wise and game-wise
Got sucked into Eve because of my good RL friends who said to try it out. Mind you, this was in early beta's. They showed me a bit of stuff what was going on - and the graphics really got to me: it was the best back then in 2002. So I signed up, waiting to get invited into the public beta's.
And yes, finally, I was included in beta 6 from then on. Thing I remember most clearly :
- There was no route planning
- There was no auto pilot
So basically you had to check the star-map every time - or remember (write down) the sequences of gates you needed to take to get from A to B. But it was a fun to fly, do battle with friends, PvE...
Fast forward to release... due to some problems with delivery of CD and stuff, I was finally able to make a character, this one actually, in may 2002. Darn, almost 15 years ago! I remember the numbers of people online slowly rising.. from 1000-ish to 2000, 4000, 7000, 9000, 12000 to a whopping 30000+, slowly but steady.
With it came a bit of troubles, like lag and ofcourse players abusing stuff which hadn't been found during beta.
Anyway, I started with my friends as we had discussed on beginning our own Corporation, Hegemonic Core, or HC for short. (and have characters that use that in the name). We worked very well together, becoming one of the bigger corps real fast and moving into 0.0 space for mining and industrial operations (mostly PvE oriented). At any evening, a mining belt was infested with corporation members all working together in mining, hauling and shooting down those pesky (npc) pirates. Great fun to be had! One of the tricks we figured out was to eject the cargo, so a fellow corp member could get the contents (leave the container in place) and use it also to warp a lot closer into the mining belt. Back then, anchoring, secure containers were mia.
After a while, ofcourse, there came some wars with some notorious gangs (although I can't remember their name now) and people who just lived for PvP. So be it. I moved out, back to hisec and left HC to start my own corp. Few came with me and found that other RL friends had also become active in Eve. So using an alliance we worked together and made tonnes of ISK using trade! One thing I remember from that era, is that with disruptors and PvP in hisec (stargates weren't protected back then) it could be a nuisance for a number of people. So, we had found a way to warp in behind the stargates and due to lagging/disruptors bouncing us back nearly on top of the stargate we were able to jump immediately leaving the pirates empty handed. Lot of bookkeeping tho. Millions of ISK - hard to get back then - in profits!
Then with announcement of T2 stuff, I decided to go all out on NPC missions and stuff, like standing and such. Unfortunately, this was very boring and not really rewarding in the long run and it got me bored with Eve. Long time playing and paying, but little rewards to show for it. Only one T2 blueprint received, after doing thousands of missions, so I decided to take a long break.
I did visit Eve sometimes, when there was an offer to play again for free for a month for example, to check out the new stuff. So somewhere in such a 'trial' period I found out about mining barges. Spend some time with that, which was fun, but still, not enough to keep me playing.
Now I've returned for a bit. It seems there is much more to do for me, but basically it's about:
- relearning the ropes
- noticing there are still some nasty bugs that newbies might not be able to overcome (like wrong skill book given and then having to buy a pricy one to continue the introduction mission!)
- Probes / scanning stuff
- Planets / customs?
- Real research, well sort of, instead of magic random god worshipping hoping to get some T2 BP....
- Figuring out the new skills, what to use and seeing about my old stuff
- Reading about all the new items (like ship hardpoints, factories - yay no more slot limitations, which I might add, was a real PITA)
So I think I'll be around for a while (again)...
